I usually enjoy beating video games with the OST itself, but sometimes i play music to feel the adrenaline or sometimes to create my own atmosphere.
I’m a metalhead, which means my Spotify playlist is full of metal bands and classic rock in general, the more intense the game is, the heavier the playlist, let’s say i’m playing Hack and Slash games like God of War, Devil May Cry or Survival Horror games, i usually play metal bands like Amon Amarth, Nile or Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth to name a few.
If I’m playing FPS like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor or Battlefield, i go for groove metal bands like Pantera, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Sepultura or some old school thrash metal like Testament, old Metallica, Megadeth etc.
With games like Uncharted, Tomb Raider, the elder scrolls or any western RPG games I pick bands like Tool, Down, Alice in Chains, Slipknot, Amorphis etc.
When I play Super Street Fighter II Turbo, iI just go random in my playlist.
However, as i said before, sometimes i just let the game play it’s original soundtrack, it depends how i feel in the moment i play video games.
